Maarit Hänninen

Hei!

I’m Maarit Hänninen, a printmaker and designer based in Amsterdam. My studio is where carved blocks, inky rollers, and handmade papers come together to form limited-edition art prints rich in floral motifs, symbolic imagery, and flowing natural lines.
The Process
Every design begins as a drawing on a sketchpad, then moves to a linoleum or woodblock where the image is carved line by careful line. Once inked, the block is pressed against paper to create multiple impressions of the design. The resulting prints, each slightly different from the next, are then signed, numbered, and released in small editions, keeping the work intimate and unique.
Printmaking
What drew me to printmaking is its multidisciplinary nature. Designing, carving, inking, and pressing are all distinct stages, each calling on a different set of skills. Printmaking leaves no room for shortcuts, demanding instead for patience and steady hands. For me, that slowness is like an anchor in a fast-changing world.
Inspiration
My visual language is shaped by the places I’ve called home: the dark evergreen forests and minimal landscapes of Finland meeting the overflowing gardens and wild roadside blooms of the Netherlands. Out of that meeting comes a tension between heaviness and light, movement and stillness, precision and wilderness.
Shaped by Hand
My work is for those who seek more than decoration - for those who recognize the beauty of something touched and shaped by hand. Every edition carries its own story, holding nature, heritage, and human connection within its lines.
Nature
I work with eco-friendly papers and sustainable inks, and I make sure that each print travels into the world with as small a footprint as possible. Respect for the natural world is not a theme, but a foundation.
Personal Touch
Each print in my collection is created by a single pair of hands, from the first carved line to the final wrap before it leaves the studio. No part of the printing or finishing is delegated; the work stays personal from start to finish, connecting artist and collector directly.
